Ludlow’s oldest pub

Hidden away within an ancient courtyard, the Rose & Crown is Ludlow’s oldest pub, there are documents showing that there was an ale house on this site in 1102. It boasts a 13th century mullioned window with trefoil in the rear stone wall.

Following a careful restoration, we have created a more spacious pub but still with intimate areas to relax. A hidden fireplace has been exposed and beams have been revealed which had remained hidden since the 1960’s. The emphasis is on ancient and characterful wood, in all its styles – some old, some new – the flooring is oak, blended with old quarry tiling and reclaimed parquet. The original pub has been enhanced by a fantastic panelled ‘Mouse room’, sister to our brewers hall here at the Brewery in Market Drayton. Bar patrons are invited to search for all the wooden mice carved by Robert “Mouseman” Thompson.

Simple, locally sourced pub food, such as Bangers & Mash, Bubble & Squeak and the Rose and Crown pie of the day are available.

The ancient ‘Sun Room’ is open to the elements on one side, the rear being the amazing medieval stone wall, this leads to the secluded back beer garden. At the front there’s another lovely courtyard, a wonderful place to loiter with its exquisite stone slabs and mass of flowers….well, in the spring and summer months.

Upstairs there is a really good sized meeting room, perfect for societies, clubs, business meetings, the lot.

Always on Tap, Joule’s Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and our English craft lager Green Monkey, alongside our rotating seasonal ale and cold craft beer. All brewed in Market Drayton with pure Shropshire mineral water.

Parking available just a 2 minute walk away in Ludlow’s town pay and display car park.

Don’t miss, the informal Blues jam sessions on the third Friday of every month.
