Every great pub has a story, and The Butchers Arms is beginning a truly special new chapter.
Rachel, our Recruitment Manager, recently sat down with Ruth and Ike, the couple running this much-loved local.
After just over six months into their journey, Ruth and Ike reflected on the adventure so far and shared what it’s been like stepping into their new life as pub tenants at the Butchers Arms.
A New Chapter Begins
Ruth, who previously worked as our Operations Assistant at Joule’s Brewery, brings a strong background in hospitality. From managing pubs to working as a brewer, she’s always been passionate about the industry. Ike, too, has hospitality experience, having worked in security.
When Ruth started helping out at The Butchers Arms during a recruitment period, she quickly felt a connection to the pub and the people.
“As soon as I started helping out at the Butchers, I knew it was a pub I’d love to run,” she says.
It didn’t take long for Ike to feel the same. Excited by the opportunity, they applied to take on the pub through the Joule’s Darwin Agreement. As part of the process, they completed several hands-on training days, including stepping in to briefly manage one of our pubs, The Red Lion, during a transition. The experience helped them build confidence and prepare for the journey ahead.

Six Months On
Now, just six months later, Ruth and Ike have truly made The Butchers Arms their own. The pub has become a warm, welcoming spot for the community, and they’ve already achieved a great deal:
- A New Food Menu: Their hearty, traditional food menu is full of classic favourites that have quickly become a hit with regulars.
- A Friendly, Supportive Team: They’ve built a strong team who share their values and are focused on giving customers a great experience.
- Cask Ale Done Right: Ruth and Ike are passionate about beer, especially cask ale, and it shows in the care and quality of every pint they serve.
- A Weekly Calendar of Events: With quiz nights, live music, and relaxed games evenings, there’s always something to look forward to at the pub.
Support Along the Way
At Joule’s, we understand that every pub tenancy is unique. The Darwin Agreement isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we tailor our support to meet the individual needs of each tenant. Ruth and Ike, for example, received invaluable guidance and support to ensure they were fully prepared for the responsibilities of running their pub.
Having previously worked as our Operations Assistant, Ruth already had a strong foundation. We supported her in obtaining her personal license and worked closely with our management accountant to deepen their understanding of financial management within the pub business.
A big impact, came from Steve, our consultant chef. He played a role in supporting Ruth and Ike with everything from menu development to recruitment, helping them develop a seamless and successful operation. Additionally, the support provided by our stock taker has been invaluable in helping them maintain efficient stock management.
Throughout their tenancy, Ruth and Ike have also been supported by their Brand Operations Manager, Vicky, who has been there every step of the way.
“Working with Joule’s has been incredibly supportive,” says Ruth. “They offer honest, down-to-earth advice, and after every meeting, I feel more confident and ready to take on the next challenge. This partnership really works.”

Looking Ahead
Ruth and Ike are excited for what’s next. They’re planning more community events, continuing to develop their food offer, and finding new ways to make the pub a welcoming space for everyone.
Their journey so far is a lovely reminder of what’s possible with the right mix of support, hard work, and heart.
“For anyone thinking about taking on their first tenancy with Joule’s through the Darwin Agreement,” they say, “it’s a big step, but truly a rewarding one.
