Last week Joule’s Brewery revealed their latest Tech Beer: Son of Man, a beer rich in orange aroma. This is the fifth beer in their Tech Beer series where the brewers have been experimenting with new and exciting flavours to add another dimension to the Joule’s traditional cask ales.
Son of Man is a light amber pale ale with the unmistakable flavour of Seville Orange. Pale malt, Orange hoppiness, mild bitterness and a tangy orange peel finish make this beer ‘sunshine in a glass’.
Each of these beers has their own cheeky personality and as the series has progressed they have been given a brighter and bolder look too. For this beer, the Brewers have taken inspiration from Rene Magritte a well-known Belgian Surrealist artist. He painted Son of Man in 1964, possibly his most well-known artwork. Magritte painted this as a self-portrait- a man in an overcoat wearing a bowler hat with an apple hovering in front of his face.
Magritte commented that “At least it hides the face partly well, so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It’s something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present”
