JOULE’S BREWERY BUYS MARKET DRAYTON BOWLING CLUB

Joule’s Brewery is pleased to announce that it has acquired Market Drayton Bowling Club.  The Club was established by Joule’s in 1905 at the back of The Corbett Hotel which was at the time owned by Joule’s, then based in nearby Stone.  The brewer also owned The Red Lion in the town which also adjoined the bowling green.

In 1974 after an acrimonious battle Joule’s was bought by rival Bass who took over both pubs.  Following the beer orders in 1989 Bass was itself forced to break up its estate and both The Corbett and Red Lion were sold off.

Joule’s Brewery re-emerged as an independent company in 2001 with the intellectual property being released by Molson Coors, who had inherited the brand.  Joule’s then re-acquired The Red Lion on Great Hales Street and the brewery was finally completed in 2010.  Four years on it has only now been able to re-unite with Market Drayton Bowling Club.

Steve Nuttall, Managing Director Joule’s commented, “Joule’s established the bowling club over 100 years ago and it is fitting that we have been re-united today.  The club sits directly behind the brewery and the bowlers play, literally, in the shadow of the brewing tower.  With the work that took place last year, car parking is much improved and the bowling green is a wonderful green oasis in our town.  It is quintessentially English, slightly eccentric and wonderful, we love it.  We have just this week had a meeting with the committee to discuss plans and how we can develop the club.  We hope the members will support a name change to Joule’s Brewery Market Drayton Bowling Club.  This will assist in building the profile of the club and of course inform players as to where it is!”

Paul Arbon, Chairman of Market Drayton Bowling Club commented, “We have been working with Joule’s over the last few months to make this happen.  With the brewery committed to us for the long term then we hope we can make the club more vibrant and attract more members with any uncertainly about our future resolved.  Our connection to the brewery is greatly valued by all our members some of whom recall the days when Joule’s operated the hotel so it really is déjà vu for some.  2015 is set to be a great year in the history of the club and we are very excited about its future”.
