2012 Work Starts At The Castle

Joules biggest ever refurbishment is under way

The pub team started back this January with earnest with the brewery's biggest project to date to restore the fabulous Castle Hotel on Wem High street.  Following extensive consultations with the conservation team the team started to carefully strip back over 200 years of additions and in some cases abuse to the ancient Castle Inn Hotel.  The building is one of the oldest in Wem and certainly the oldest pub.  As the team stripped back moden fittings the story of this inn revealed itself, the oldest section is a timber framed building dating from the 16th century.  This was added to at the rear, later, but of the same period.  To the left a late Georgian addition completed the structure we see today.  The current building is now quite substantial and has evolved over time but it is surprising what a very small inn the orginal Castle would have been.  This will be evident for all to see once we re open and the full extent of the frame can be seen.

The work will progress for several months to come, we have a clear vision to create the most fabulous country inn.  The early signs look very good, our job is to restore the very best of this old inn, another great Joules tap house, and we hope an old inn lovingly restored for a few centuries to come.
