Newport based Nova Raiders Cycling Club proudly sponsored by local Brewery Joule’s have successfully undertaken a sponsored time challenge, visiting all the Shropshire Joule’s houses to raise funds for Severn Hospice, in honour of the late and much admired Nova Raiders member Paul Grubert.

Joule’s Brewery have been having regular meetings with the Raiders over the past few months to discuss ways in which the brewery can support the club and Severn Hospice.  David, Nova Raiders comments “Earlier this year Nova Raiders lost one of our founder members Paul Grubert to cancer, in his last few days Paul was looked after by Severn Hospice, Telford. Nova Raiders since its inception has always raised money for local charities so we thought it would be nice to organise a fund raising event to remember Paul & thank Severn Hospice for all their good work.” The idea of a relay around all The Shropshire Joule’s Houses was an exciting prospect for both the Brewery and the Raiders. The finalised route was 102miles long, navigating past 13 Joule’s Houses and include 3 points for relaying teams.

On Saturday 19th of September, Nova Raiders gathered at The New Inn, Newport – the official home for the Joule’s sponsored team. Arriving at 10.30am and greeted with bacon sandwiches all provided by The New Inn’s landlord, Darren Wood to fuel them on their fundraising journey. The Raiders then spilt into their 4 groups, the first then preparing to set off in the direction of Church Stretton, with the Joule’s Green Monkey Craft beer bus following the cyclists for added support! The route took the Raiders across Shropshire, covering Newport, Church Stretton, Shrewsbury, Ruyton XI Town, Wem, Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Cheswardine.

With over 1,000 entries for the “Guess the time of challenge” sponsors and teammates were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Nova Raiders return to The New Inn, Newport. The winning entry was announced on Sunday 20th with Paul Keeling guessing just 8 seconds off the official recorded time of 6 hours 36 minutes and 6 seconds. Prizes included a 36 pint box of Joule’s Ale, a meal for two at The Red Lion, Brewery Tap, Market Drayton and a pair of Joule’s Brewery Tour Tickets.

David, Nova Raiders commented “The event has been a great success with 80 of our members taking part & raising funds, the final amount raised looks like it will be in excess of £3500. Also our members had the opportunity for a spot of liquid refreshment on the way round, from the very hospitable Joule’s Landlords and Landladies.”

The sponsorship, which formally began at the start of March, continues to develop as an exciting opportunity for The Brewery. Vicky, from Joule’s commented, “It’s a pleasure to work with The Nova Raiders, since they approached us in the summer of last year, their commitment and enthusiasm for The Brewery has been fantastic. The club is very much focused on raising money for local charities and sits at the center of the Newport; being a key part of the community and supporting local events.”
